Developer: Westin Hotel project on time, under budget

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The $50 million Westin Hotel under construction downtown near the BJCC is going up so smoothly that the developer expects the project to be built under budget, and he says it remains on track for a January 2013 opening.

New renderings raise roof on upcoming BJCC area look

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Bayer Properties is showing off new images of the BJCC entertainment district as it intensifies a push to land tenants for the $20 million project.

The computer-generated renderings of the entertainment district, which is now under construction, are being unveiled during today’s Blueprint Birmingham Summit.

The images provide the most detailed look to date of the district, which will incorporate rooftop entertainment space, a rooftop pool at the Westin Hotel, possible rooftop dining, and a rooftop jumbo screen for simulcasting concerts and airing sporting events.

Giant video screen gets green light for BJCC entertainment district

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The giant video screen for the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex entertainment district cleared its last hurdle this morning, ensuring it will be a coming attraction when the restaurants and shops open early next year.

The Birmingham Design Review Committee approved a programming plan for the 19-foot by 35-foot video screen after Tad Snider, executive director of the BJCC, and a subcommittee met to address concerns. The screen plans to air significant sporting events like the Super Bowl or major college football games. It will even be capable of showing some live footage from concerts and events taking place inside some of the BJCC venues.

$70 million Westin project on schedule as Birmingham launches YouthBuild inititiative

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Birmingham Mayor William Bell toured the $70 million Westin Hoteland entertainment district construction site where he said the project is on time and on budget for an early 2013 completion.

Bell was also joined on the tour by Birmingham Schools Superintendent Craig Witherspoon and the two men used the occasion to announce YouthBuild, an initiative to involve high school students with a hands-on introduction to construction and design.

The program is aimed at educating at-risk and low-income Birmingham youth in the construction trades with the city and its partners coming up with a 25 percent, $250,000 match for a $1 million federal work force development grant.
